The netWORK Employment Service
The netWORK Employment Service (netWORK) is part of the Careers and Employment Service at
Sheffield Hallam University. These Terms and Conditions details its commitment to enable
students to obtain information about graduate, part time, temporary and voluntary employment job search
opportunities.
netWORK is not a recruitment agency and will not enter into contracts of employment with students
or employers. The purpose of netWORK is to facilitate the employment of students on campus in
internal departments and faculties as well as to act as an information exchange between external
employers and students and graduates of Sheffield Hallam University.
By engaging in the use of netWORK, all parties are agreeing to abide by the terms and conditions
stated within these Terms and Conditions.
A. Terms and conditions - General
1. netWORK will provide employment information and advice to all students and graduates conducting job searches (hereafter referred to as students) of Sheffield Hallam University, irrespective of whether they are full time, part time or distance learners at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
2. Services offered by netWORK will include vacancy advertising, recruitment and information
events and the supply of students to internal departments for casual opportunities.
3. netWORK will provide information about employment job searching issues such as tax and the National
Minimum Wage, or, where appropriate, direct the enquirer to another source which can offer
more specialised information and guidance.
4. netWORK will endeavour to respond to all enquiries within 3 working days.
5. netWORK will not disclose the personal details of students to employers without the student's
consent.
6. Contracts of employment are between students and employers. If a student believes their
employer to be in breach of the law, netWORK will seek to give appropriate guidance. In such
circumstances it is solely the responsibility of the student to bring any legal action against the
employer.
B. Terms and conditions - Students and Graduates
1. All employer and vacancy information is published in good faith and is based on information
provided by the employer to netWORK. Students must confirm for themselves that this
information is accurate. Sheffield Hallam University cannot take any responsibility for
statements made in employer's recruitment advertisements or literature.
2. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure they have the relevant skills and qualifications
required for a post before applying for it.
3. Students will endeavour to make full use of the facilities available from the Careers and
Employment Service in order to help them make and implement well-informed career
decisions.
4. Students will be prompt, courteous and honest in all dealings with employers and notify
them immediately if they decide to withdraw their applications at any stage of their career job search, or if they need to change any arrangements.
5. Students must inform netWORK immediately they obtain work, giving appropriate details
of their employment job search success.
6. Student pool members must keep the netWORK office informed of any change to their
details such as contact details and availability.
7. Any user of netWORK who, without good reason, fails to attend pre-arranged interviews,
report to work at the agreed times, attend an event which they have signed up for or who
otherwise abuses the service, might be restricted from using netWORK's services or
removed from the student pool.
8. When attending interviews at employers' premises, students will seek only repayment of
reasonable expenses incurred.
9. Once a contract of employment has been signed, students should decline all other
conflicting offers and cancel other applications immediately. If candidates wish to qualify
their acceptance in any way (and the possibility of further study represents such a
qualification) this should be clearly stated at the time of acceptance and this may affect the
terms of the offer.
10. For part time and temporary work, students are expected to take their study commitments
into consideration and are advised not to consider the possibility of employment job search that will adversely affect their academic work. A maximum of 15 hours per week in term time is strongly recommended for
full time undergraduates.
11. Students are expected to request a signed contract of employment at the end of their job search.
12. International students are expected to familiarise themselves with any visa restrictions before job searches and adhere to the conditions outlined.
C. Terms and conditions - Employers
1. netWORK has a duty of care to students and as such will endeavour to ensure that
opportunities or services publicised do not endanger or disadvantage them in any way.
2. Employers must comply with legislation against discrimination in employment on basis of gender,
ethnic origin, disability and age.
3. The employer must not contravene the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
4. netWORK has no obligation to accept a registration from an employer and as such reserves the
right to refuse to publish a company profile or advertise their services.
5. netWORK has no obligation to accept vacancies from employers and as such reserves the
right to edit or refuse to advertise an employer's vacancy for student job search. In such cases the decision of the
Head of Careers and Employment Service, or their nominee, is final.
6. netWORK will not advertise the following vacancies: on campus brand managers and
leafleteers; vacancies which require students to be self-employed without due justification;
multi-level marketing schemes; commission and piece work only opportunities (National
Minimum Wage not guaranteed); essay writers, academic tutors (written) and support
researchers; agency vacancies which require the student to pay a fee; escrow operators and
vacancies which require applicants or recruits to make use of their personal bank / building
society account for purchases or sales; vacancies which may compromise the health & safety
of the student; any other vacancy which may damage the University's good reputation or fails
to satisfy netWORK's terms and conditions.
7. All employers are expected to provide a written contract of employment to those conducting a job search. Vacancies in private households will not be advertised until a completed and signed contract has been returned to netWORK.
8. Recruiters of vacancies in private households are expected to contact the PAYE section of
their local Inland Revenue to make arrangements tax and national Insurance contributions.
9. Recruiters acting on their client's behalf must inform netWORK of the client's name and
location. This will be divulged to students only when requested.
10. The information submitted by the employer, including the contact details, may be used for other
purposes such as marketing and evaluation.
11. Internal recruiters must obtain budgetary sign off via the appropriate documentation and
comply with University procedure when recruiting a student for a casual vacancy.
12. The employer must make clear the nature of the work offered to the student doing job searches, the specific duties involved, any necessary skills required, the proposed wages and other terms. Vacancy details must be factual and presented in plain English. Employers should also make available material to give
students an overall picture of their organisations and the relevant jobs within them.
13. Vacancies must be advertised with a closing date of no more than three months in advance
with the exception of future graduate vacancies. Exceptions to this rule will be taken on a case
by case basis and will be at the discretion of the netWORK team.
14. netWORK reserves the right not to display or distribute employers' literature among the students conducting a career job search.
15. netWORK reserves the right not to arrange campus visits (presentations, workshops,
information stands and interview sessions) for employers.
16. Provisional arrangements for campus visits will be made on receipt of the completed booking
form. Confirmation will be made in writing and is subject to availability.
17. Employers visiting campus are not permitted to canvass students, distribute leaflets or display
promotional materials.
18. Tariffs are correct at the time of printing but may be subject to change. Please note that all
prices quoted are subject to VAT.
19. If the booking is cancelled for reasons within the University's control no charges will be made
and any deposits will be refunded less any actual costs already incurred.
20. No financial or other liability will be accepted by the University if the booking is cancelled for
reasons beyond its control.
21. We can only accept your event booking on condition your organisation has public liability
insurance for not less than £2m limit of indemnity; render us harmless of all responsibilities for
your members and their equipment; indemnity the University for any losses incurred during
your visit.
22. The University reserves the right to recover any additional costs incurred from a cancelled
booking.
23. All fees will be discussed and agreed at the time an employer places an advertisement or
requests any of the other services provided by netWORK. The employer must pay for the
services provided by netWORK within 30 days of receiving the invoice detailing these charges.
24. netWORK reserves the right to terminate the contract in the event of non-payment of fees and
reserves the right not to enter into further contracts with debtors.
25. The employer shall satisfy themselves as to the suitability of any employees and shall be
responsible for taking up any references provided by the employee before engaging the
student/graduate. Employers should indicate to the candidate and to the referee whether or not
the offer is conditional on the reference.
26. Employers should as a matter of courtesy notify netWORK in advance if a direct approach is
being made to any academic department for recruitment purposes or if the employer proposes
to use the services of a recruitment agency.
27. Employers should be flexible and provide alternative times and dates for selection activities
where these may clash with exams and other important academic activities.
28. Employers should be flexible in the setting of deadlines for the acceptance of offers. Short
deadlines may limit the ability of students to make informed decisions and prejudice the
recruitment activities of other employers.
29. Employers should pay reasonable expenses for off campus interviews, always making it clear
before the interview if such payment will not be offered.
30. It is the responsibility of the employer to let all candidates know the result of an application as
soon as possible and to inform netWORK when the post has been filled. Employers should
manage students' expectations by promptly communicating to them which stage of the
recruitment process their applications have reached, including those that have been
unsuccessful, so that students can continue their student job search.
31. If an employer finds that a student recruited via netWORK does not fulfill reasonable
expectations netWORK may, at its discretion, re-advertise the vacancy.
32. netWORK will endeavour to offer the best possible service to all employers, but will not be
responsible in any way for the ability or conduct of any student recruited after their job search through them or any loss to the employer however caused.
33. Please note that the University operates a no smoking policy, an equal opportunities policy and
a freedom of speech policy.
34. All bookings are taken on the understanding that any party involved in an event will not commit
any act of racial or sexual harassment on University premises.
35. This agreement shall be governed by and construed in all respects in accordance with the laws
of England and Wales and the parties agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the courts of
England and Wales.

Integrating the
Associated Candidate Countries into the
6th Framework Programme through
networking activities and improved NCP
services.
This web site has
been developed by the SUSTDEV
National Contact Points to help the
research community find new
partners, extend their networks and
to overcome the barriers to
participation in the 6th FP.
The INTEGRATING-ACC project is to
promote co-operation with the
research community in the New Member
States and the Associated Candidate
Countries in order to integrate them
into the 6th Framework Programme.
This will be done by mobilizing the
National Contact Points of 22
countries and can be regarded as an
experiment in establishing and
testing work practices which will
lead to a better integration of the
ACC scientific community into the
European Research Area using the
instruments available in the 6th FP.
The proposed activities will focus
on the thematic priority 6:
‘Sustainable development, Global
change and ecosystems’.
Project proposed activities
| • |
Actively promote the research
capacity in the ACC, e.g. by
inviting the ACC NCPs to the
information
days in the Member States. |
| • |
Analyze and reinforce the networking
approach. The existing research
networks in Europe will be
identified and their activities and
practices analyzed. The NCP
networking activities will be
reinforced both internally and
externally with other networks. |
| • |
Overcome the barriers to
participation in the 6th Framework
Programme. This will be done by
improving the NCP services. NCPs
across Europe will be analyzed and
Best Practice Guidelines
established and tested. |
